Big Ambitions Review

Big Ambitions 1.0 (28 August 2026) is Hovgaard Games’ follow-up to Startup Company: a single-player, open-city business RPG set in a toy New York. You are not a floating cursor. You are a person who sleeps, eats, hires, and eventually owns streets. Steam’s recent and overall scores have stayed Very Positive through Early Access into launch. That goodwill is real. So is the spreadsheet fatigue.

This is not a hype recap. It is a buyer’s guide. For how to actually play, use getting started. For what changed at launch, use version 1.0.

What it feels like after ten hours

The fantasy lands. Buying a van, staffing a noisy gift shop, and watching a day print without you is a better dopamine hit than most tycoon “+1 gold” ticks. Market Insider makes neighborhoods feel different. Hell’s Kitchen is not Midtown. The Hamptons in 1.0 finally gives the late-game a place to put a ridiculous house.

The friction also lands. Early hours are walking. Mis-clicks in interior designer cost evenings. A bad customer cap can make a “profitable idea” feel cursed. If you hated furniture in House Flipper but loved economy layers in a management sim, you will have a complicated relationship with this game — the controls page exists because the UI is the boss fight.

Who it is for

Buy it if you want a sandbox that mixes life-sim needs with supply chains, and you are willing to treat employees as the first automation. The employees loop is the skill. Warehouses and HQ are the payoff. Factories are the optional thesis.

Skip it if you want a five-minute mobile tycoon, a live-service with codes, or a game you play with friends. There are no shared sessions and no competitive online mode. Rivals are AI names on a leaderboard you can buy.

Also skip it (or wait for a sale) if Steam Deck is your only machine. Valve still lists the Deck as unsupported, and the UI is small-text PC.

1.0 versus Early Access

Launch is a graduation, not a new genre. The Hamptons, furniture, minigames, personal driver, food delivery, HQ pricing, and a banking/tax pass are the headline. The spine is the same game veterans already put 100 hours into. If you bounced in 2023 because the tutorial was rigid, the 0.9 quest rebuild is the bigger deal than a mansion. If you bounced because you hate logistics, 1.0 will not save you.

Performance is the other honest asterisk. A busy city with lots of staffed interiors can chug. Read system requirements and take the “dedicated GPU” note seriously on Mac too.

Economy design

Demand is readable without being trivial. Overlapping shops punish greed. Promotion caps stop you from solving a tiny room with infinite ads. Volume versus margin is a real choice, which is why the tier list exists. 1.0 taxes and property make “never buy real estate” less of a religion than it was in some EA metas.

The late game can still flatten into copy-paste shops. Workshop blueprints are how the community keeps that fun. Using them is not a moral failure.

Verdict

Big Ambitions 1.0 is a rare tycoon that makes success feel physical. It is also a rare tycoon that will happily watch you waste a Saturday on chairs. Recommended for management fans who like a little role-play and a lot of lists. Not recommended as a chill background game or a multiplayer hangout.

If that sounds like a yes, start with getting started, pick a format from the tier list, and keep Discord from the links page nearby for patch surprises. If that sounds like a maybe, watch the trailer on the home page and a long play from someone who already hates their own warehouse. The game does not pretend to be short.

Price at launch sat in the typical mid-tier Steam sim band with an introductory discount window. That is the right price if you will play past the first shop. It is steep if you only wanted uncle Fred’s cutscene.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

Is Big Ambitions 1.0 worth buying?

Yes if you like single-player tycoons with walking, hiring, and supply chains. No if you wanted a short, cozy, or multiplayer game.

Is the full release very different from Early Access?

The spine is the same. 1.0 adds The Hamptons, lifestyle systems, and banking tweaks. Tutorial quality jumped earlier, in 0.9.

Does Big Ambitions have multiplayer?

No. Single-player only. Rivals are AI.

How long is a Big Ambitions save?

Dozens of hours if you chase a chain and factories. The first shop can feel complete in a long evening.
